Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
