Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
